In the photo world the High dynamic range (see wikipedia) is a giant tool for colors in your effects, is like on the movies, remember these coloured scenes? Well, now we have the possibility to use it on our photos, here you can see a detailed tutorial for HDR.
Gregory Ward is widely considered to be the founder of the file format for high dynamic range imaging. The use of high dynamic range imaging in computer graphics has been pioneered by Paul Debevec. He is considered to be the first person to create computer graphic images using HDR maps to realistically light and animate CG objects.
This is the wikipedia entry for HDR, with all the history, you may read all here
The best way to test(in my opinion) your HDR techniques is photoshop, the adobe “legendary” editor. I found an amazing tutorial of how-to-do HDR in photoshop CS2
Some HDR examples
This is not intended to be either a comprehensive how-to, or a complete technical treatise on the subject of HDR, or Adobe’s implementation in Photoshop CS2. Rather, and since I’ve been involved in the CS2 beta program and therefore have some experience with using the product – I thought that there would be photographers (especially landscape photographers) who would find an initial look at this exciting new capability to be of interest.
