Posted on: May 21st, 2008 Gigapan - 1000 Megapixels in Your Camera?
I tought that the 21MP camera was the high end of mega pixels market, this new technology created by a group in Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania impresses me. It is cameras equipped in a tripod that does around 350 images in various angles and merge then all in computer to create a google-map-like gigantic panoramic photo.
Photo with zoom
Times Online says it creates a 3D image, but I disagree, is just a big image with big zoom. You probably already have seen some panoramic pics before, but they all need some brainstorm, a good gear and a good hand from the photographer after all. These scientist just made everything banal.
the image without zoom (one of these buildings)
Some of these images are available at Gigapan.org. I don’t see a big use for this technology, unless you want a 100 meters poster with really accurate details. The only good use will be in case of these google-map-styled photos.
Could you see the difference between an 8 Mega Pixel and a 1 Giga Pixel image (without using zoom)? Me neither… It still rocks anyway!
